SRIA Survey

The EATiP completed its Vision and Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) in 2012, examining the future of European aquaculture and how research and innovation could contribute to sustainable aquatic food supplies in Europe. This was achieved through the European project 'Aquainnova'. The Vision is:

"In 2030, European aquaculture will be sustainable and globally competitive – a dynamic activity in coastal and inland economies, not only supplying significant amounts of high quality and nutritious food to the consumer but also diversifying to provide a range of new products and integrated services.

Aquaculture production will grow and diversify in Europe, following consumer and market demands, adapting to climatic and geographic circumstances, in harmony with nature and society.

This will be achieved by enhancing husbandry, welfare, technology and knowledge management while improving the understanding of the factors influencing development, be these technical, commercial or social, so as to assure the sustainability of European aquaculture and its global role in technological leadership.

The vision of the European aquaculture industry is, by the year 2030, to provide annually 4.5 million tons of sustainable food products, worth € 14 billion, and more than 150,000 direct jobs."


Based on excellence in science, technology and industry, the Vision identified that European aquaculture had to:

  • adapt to evolving consumer and market demands, supporting consumer lifestyles and preferences
  • constantly apply technological advances created by institutional, academic and industrial research efforts
  • maintain diversity in its operations (species, scale and type of of operation)
  • employ highly skilled personnel at each level of the value chain.

Challenges identified in the development of the SRIA included:

  • Competition in the marketplace
  • Access to and competition for space
  • Maintaining health and welfare
  • Improving resource use
  • Aquaculture governance (European and national)

Using the EATiP Thematic Areas and the contributions of over 400 experts in the different subject areas covered, each Thematic Area developed clear Goals, linked to subsidiary topics, that were targeted as key research & innovation topics. The Thematic Areas examined are:

  1. Product Quality, Consumer Safety & Health
  2. Technology and Systems
  3. Managing the Biological Life Cycle
  4. Sustainable Feed Production
  5. Integration with the Environment
  6. Knowledge Management
  7. Aquatic Animal Health & Welfare
  8. Socio-economics, Management & Governance

In early 2016, the EATiP Board of Directors agreed that the SRIA should be reviewed, so as to:

  • Identify areas where progress has been achieved, through research & innovation or governance improvements;
  • Review Goals/sub-goals for their relevance in 2016
  • Prioritise existing or new goals for recommendations on actions

The survey allowed participants to review the Goals/sub-goals developed by the Thematic Areas that created the EATiP SRIA. The results will be provided at the 2017 EATiP Annual General Meeting for further discussion and final approval.
